Q1: how the different blood group & its components will be provided?
A1: Through organizing the process of blood collection from donors, examining the collected blood with the latest fully automated machines & diagnostic tests, followed by separating the blood to its components & storing each component in its optimum storing temperature and condition until the time when it will be transferred to the patients. All this require the establishment of a central blood bank that could unify the efforts by connecting other blood banks & the Central Blood Bank with each other as in all leading developed countries.



Q2: What are the CBB goals?
A2:

  1. Providing all blood types & its components free of charge & for all patients in all hospitals; governmental or private, for all health sectors according to international standards.

  2. Constant coordination with the Ministry of Health, in order to improve & develop the blood transfusion services.

  3. Expanding information & awareness about blood transfusion services & its importance to the patients. As well while spreading health awareness & blood transfusion benefits among the public.


Q3: How will you work & what is your plan to achieve your goals?
A3:
The following will be done:

  1. Receiving blood donors & performing a medical examination. This will be followed by recording all the data from the blood donors & making sure of their wellbeing before & after the blood donation.

  2. Organizing donation campaigns outside the Central Blood Bank in different areas in coordination with the designated superiors to decide the locations & time for these campaigns. This will be done by mobile unites designed & equipped for that purpose.

  3. Provide the therapeutic services for the diseased patients & helping trauma victims.

  4. Performing training sessions & workshops for service providers in Central Blood Banks to raise their quality up to the international standards.

  5. Setting up charitable events to introduce CBB & its activities, which contribute in raising the public’s health awareness.

  6. Making scientific studies, research work, symposiums & lectures for both professionals & public.

 

Q4: Is the National Charity Society for Blood registered?
A4:
Yes. The certificate of registration was issued by the Ministry of Social Affairs according to the regulations of Charity Societies & Institutions, decreed by the House of Ministers (number 107) dated 25/6/1410 H and its executive legislations rendered by the ministerial decree number 760 dated 30/1/1412 H by his Excellency Minister of Labor & Social Affairs issued decree number 18297ش at 22/4/1424 to register the National Charity Society for Blood, headquartered in Jeddah & its area of service is Makkah & its surrounding regions. Therefore it is registered under number 242 dated 22/4/1424 H. The general regulations o0f the National Charity Society of Blood was published in Um-Al- Qora newspaper, issue number 3950 released at 18/5/14124 H.

Q6: Have you started the project & where?

Yes. The 1st Central Blood Bank building is under construction in Jeddah, Al-Zahraa area. The president of SGH Group had donated the piece of land on Al- Batterjee Street.
 

Q7: What is the cost of establishing this Blood Bank?
A7:
The expected total cost of this set up is 15 million S.R.

 

Q8: Is there a simple description for the building?
A8:
Yes. The building is constructed of 3 floors:

1st floor: The reception for donors, then donors will be physically examined & their blood samples. There will be the blood donation halls some for males & others for females. Also, a hall of blood apheresis, blood processing, unscreened & screened blood rooms respectively.
 
2nd floor:

  • a- Laboratories where blood & blood products units are tested. There is an Immunohematology Lab to solve the problems of repeated blood transfusion & antibodies. Also, there is a laboratory of quality inspection for the QI Officer.

  • b- All administrative sections as well as the scientific library; contain references & on-line computers to follow up the latest scientific findings in the field of transfusion medicine by the internet.

3rd floor: The conferences & auditorium hall used for lectures, workshops & training sessions for blood transfusion professionals. Lastly is the dining hall.

We know that blood saves lives, so we are readily committed to provide blood & its components with our services 24 hours the whole year. All the workers in this Central Blood Bank will be hired according to these standards seeking to present a non-profit service for God’s blessings.

Yes. Our main target is: encourage generous people to assist us in establishing 20 central blood banks on an international level by the year 2020.
 

Q13:  What benefit would return on donors?
A13:

1st: The immense bless rewarded by God due their contribution to save a person’s life who is in need for blood.

2nd: The donor receives a general health check up through a full panel of overall tests. & he receives a certificate.

3rd: Considered to relief headache caused in some people by the increase number of red blood cells in their blood more than normal ranges which increases blood viscosity & headache. Blood donation also helps to decrease blood pressure at people with slight increase of blood pressure.

4th: Honorary & recognition: for example, the Dean of Medical Collage at King Abdul-Aziz University, Dr. Hassan Saleh Jamal had honoured a number of constant donors at the International Day of Blood Donation & it was celebrated at 60 countries including Saudi Arabia.

5th: Encouraging others to donate their blood & following the Prophet’s conducts (Sunna) “peace be upon him”, where the one who introduce a good practice in Islam receives the same rewards of all who follow this good practice without any anything being deducted from their rewards.
 

Q14: Have you heard about the website dedicated for blood donation through the internet?

Yes. A group of Saudi Youth came together and established the 1st website for blood donation. The website is www.freeblood.com
This website is a database gathering the names, phone numbers & blood types for the website subscribers who wish to donate their blood all over the world. For example if a person living in Jeddah needs blood, all what his relatives need to is log on this website & search for other residents in Jeddah who would have the same blood type & the way to contact the donor who would be welling to donate his blood without delay. The donor must go to the hospital where the recipient is admitted. This service is very important for people with rare blood types.

Q16: What is the area of services of the society?
A16:
The service area of the society involves Makkah Al- Mokarama state and it’s surroundings.
The main center lies in Jeddah and it is possible to create branches for it. By a decision of the general assembly and approved by Ministry of Social Affairs. This is according to the main bylaws of the society.

 

Q17:  What about blood donors’ registration?
A17:
There will be a file for each donor in the CBB computer database containing all personal information (Name, Phone number, Sex, Position, Address, Age and Nationality … etc.)
 

Q18: How are Donors selected?
A18:
Donors are selected through specific standards of physical examination, laboratory investigations & medical history. These criteria tend to eliminate any threats that could endanger either the donor or the recipient.
The vigilant selection of donors protects both donors & patients. The process starts with performing a set of laboratory investigations for potential donors to specify their blood types & hemoglobin concentration, followed by medical examination which consists of:

  1. Weight: minimum weight should not be less than 50 Kg.

  2. Body Temperature: should not exceed 37.5° C

  3. Pulse: should be within normal range between 50- 100 beats/minute & no irregular rhythm.

  4. Blood Pressure: a donor with high or low blood pressure is excluded.

  5. General Appearance: a donor showing signs of illness, use of narcotics or unstable psychological or mental state is excluded.

 

Q19: What about donor’s medical history?
A19:
To prove donor’s eligibility after the previous steps, the specialist doctor presents a questionnaire to the donor, as an example:

  1. Blood Donation: if he/she did donate in the previous 8 weeks.

  2. Donor exclusion: if the donor was excluded before, when & why?

  3. Pregnancy for ladies.

  4. Surgeries & major diseases.

  5. Presence of heart, lungs or liver diseases.

  6. Weight Loss.

  7. Types of medication taken & reason.

  8. Infection with Hepatitis C, Malaria or Diabetes.

  9. Immunization against infectious diseases & the time they were received?

 

Q20: How Blood platelets will be donated?
A20:
Blood platelets are one of the important blood components. It is helping in the coagulation pathway leading to wounds healing & it protects the human body from continuous bleeding in case of injury. The aphaeresis machines help in separation of platelets & return other blood components to the donor.
This procedure takes about 1 ½ hour. The period between each donation & the other is considered short & it has no effect on Red and White Blood Cells as they are returned to the donor by the machine itself.
 

Q21: What are the blood components which the Central Blood Bank could prepare?
A21:
Central Blood Bank could prepare the following components:

  1. Packed Red Blood Cells.

  2. Leukodepleted Red Blood Cells.

  3. Washed Red Blood Cells.

  4. Fresh Frozen Plasma.

  5. Platelets Concentrates.

  6. Leukocytes Concentrate.

  7. Factor VIII concentrate.

  8. Irradiated blood.

  9. Red cell freezing & storing until needed.

 

Q22: What are the machines used in blood separation?
A22:
These machines are used either to prepare the different kinds of blood components or treating certain patients. The 4 prepared blood products are:

  1. Platelets Concentrates.

  2. Granulocytes Concentrates.

  3. Lymphocytes Concentrates.

  4. Red Blood Cells.

As a therapeutic method, these machines remove one of the un-needed circulating blood components & replace it with other blood components or fluids.
 

Q23: What about the Quality in Central Blood Bank?
A23:
To guarantee the quality of this blood bank, The Quality Officer will manage the following:

  1. The quality of all devices & clinical reagents.

  2. Performance & used methodology for workers in all departments; administrators & technicians.

  3. Steps & procedures for reconstitution of all serums & solutions used in performed tests & preparations.

  4. Blood & blood components storing & ways of units release.

  5. Subscription for international organization to evaluate our blood bank performance in coordination with the World Health Organization (WHO) & the American Association for Blood Banks (AABB).

 

Q24: In what way this society will continue to be funded in order to maintain its obligation with ascending performance?

The president & board members of the National Charity Society for Blood beseech all philanthropists to become part of this great project which will present non-profitable exceptional services for our community & will open with the scientific institutions in Transfusion Medicine the channels inside our beloved kingdom. Our praised Lord said in His Holy Quraan: “And whatever good you send before you for yourselves (i.e. Nawāfil – non – obligatory acts of worship: prayers, charity, fasting, Hajj and Umrah), you will certainly find it with Allah, better and greater in reward. And seek forgiveness of Allāh. Verily, Allāh is Oft- Forgiving, Most Merciful. “Al- Muzzammil (20)”.



Q25: What is the latest news of CBB?
A25:
CBB building almost completed. Our dream came true, and the reality became identical to our vision for the institution. Still, internal preparation and new challenges must be met. We need everyone’s participation.
